GUILD LEADER
GUILD WINS Back Pay Award Could Top $320,000 An arbitrator has ruled the company violated
the Guild contract in January 1999 when it failed to give Guild members
the same 3.02 percent base wage increase received by other unionized employees
at the paper. Guild members received a base wage increase
of 2 percent plus a 1 percent gainsharing adjustment. In a decision dated July 26, and received
by the Guild July 27, arbitrator Gary Altman ruled that the contract requires
the 1 percent gainsharing adjustment give to Guild members to be "in
addition" to the 3.02 percent base wage increase given other company
employees. This would have the effect of bringing the
1999 rate 4.0502 percent over the 1998 level. Because of the passage of time, the Guild
estimates the Journal's back pay liability at about $320,000.
